## Beschrijving

PageKiwi checks your WordPress site and tells you, in plain English, what’s wrong
and where to click to fix it. It’s made for people who look after a website but
aren’t technical: store owners, club secretaries, town offices.

Press **Check my site** and PageKiwi looks at:

 * **Settings that quietly hurt you:** search engines turned away, an address without
the padlock, the default tagline, no site icon, page addresses like ?p=123, updates
   waiting, a user called “admin”.
 * **Pictures:** Media Library pictures with no alt text (fill it in right there,
without leaving the list), pictures in your pages with no alt text, pictures
that don’t load, pictures over plain http, and photos so heavy they slow your
   pages down.
 * **Links in your posts, pages and synced patterns:** dead links to your own pages
and to other websites, links to pages that have moved, leftover test addresses(
localhost, staging sites), http links to your own https site, “click here” links,
links with no words, phone links that won’t ring, and email links whose address
   or domain can’t get email.
 * **Facts:** pages that give different phone numbers or email addresses.
 * **Headings and structure:** a second main heading, headings that skip a level,
tables without headers, and embedded maps or videos without a title, which confuse
   screen reader users.

Every problem says what’s wrong, where it is, how soon to fix it, and where to click.
A box on your dashboard shows the count from the last check.

#### Private by design

PageKiwi reads your own site’s settings, Media Library and published content. To
see whether links still work, your own server asks your pages and up to 15 of the
other websites you link to (a quick request or two each, saying it’s PageKiwi for
WordPress). It also looks up domain names: those in email links, to see whether
they can get email, those of linked websites that don’t answer, to see whether they
still exist, and your own, to make sure your server can look names up at all. It
sends nothing to PageKiwi, and adds nothing to your visitors’ pages: no scripts,
no tracking, no ads.

The “More free checks on pagekiwi.com” links on PageKiwi’s screen open https://pagekiwi.
com with your site’s address filled in, only if you click them. See PageKiwi’s privacy
page: https://pagekiwi.com/privacy/

#### What it can’t do

PageKiwi reads published posts, pages, other public content (like WooCommerce products)
and synced patterns, up to 500 of the most recently changed, and the 500 newest
Media Library pictures. It doesn’t check menus, widgets or your theme’s templates,
or drafts, scheduled and private posts.

Automated checks find many common problems, not all of them. PageKiwi helps you
get closer to meeting accessibility rules like the ADA and WCAG; it can’t promise
your site meets them, and it isn’t legal advice. Check the official sources, such
as https://www.ada.gov/ and https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/, as
rules and dates change.

## Installatie

 1. In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins, Add Plugin, Upload Plugin, and choose the
    pagekiwi.zip file.
 2. Activate it.
 3. Click **PageKiwi** in the admin menu and press **Check my site**.

## FAQ

### Does it slow down my site?

No. It only runs when you press Check my site, in your admin, and adds nothing to
the pages your visitors see.

### Does it fix things for me?

Alt text for Media Library pictures can be filled in straight from PageKiwi’s list.
Everything else links to the right place in WordPress, with what to change.

### Why does it say a picture has no alt text when I added some?

WordPress copies a picture’s alt text into a page when you add the picture. If you
add alt text in the Media Library later, pages that already use the picture keep
the old, empty one: click the picture in the page and fill it in there too.

### Does it work on multisite?

Yes. Activate it on one site or on the whole network: each site’s administrators
check their own site and see only its results. Problems that only the network’s
administrator can fix, like a site’s address, say to ask them. There’s no network-
wide results page yet.

### Is it free?

Yes. No account, no upgrade, no ads.

## Changelog

#### 0.3.7

 * Checks of very large or unusual pages finish quickly: a few text patterns could
take far too long on pages built to trip them up.

#### 0.3.6

 * PageKiwi is marked as beta on its screen and in its description.

#### 0.3.5

 * The “More free checks on pagekiwi.com” list no longer links to the browser extension,
   which isn’t publicly released yet.

#### 0.3.4

 * Fewer false alarms: “send this to a friend” email links (mailto:?subject=…),
phone links to 911, 311 or 988, phone numbers with an extension or pause, links
whose address has an apostrophe (on PHP 7.4), and websites that say “Page not
found” only to quick checks (now confirmed with a full request first).
 * Sites whose admin is forced onto https while the site itself is still on http
now get the “Not secure” finding, and no longer get http warnings meant for https
   sites.
 * Links to your own private or draft pages, which visitors can’t open, are reported
as dead; links like ?p=123 are checked too.
 * Synced patterns are checked once, on their own, and named as patterns.
 * “Click here.” and “Read more »” count as links that don’t say where they go.
 * Findings stay in the same order on PHP 7.4, posts without a title show “(no title)”
everywhere, and very long titles are shortened.
 * Pictures with spaces or accents in their file names are found on disk instead
of being asked for over the web.

#### 0.3.3

 * Links to websites that no longer exist are reported again (0.3.1 and 0.3.2 missed
   them).
 * Fewer false alarms: linked pictures whose alt text has an apostrophe, phone links
written with %20 for spaces, file names like logo@2x.png counted as email addresses,
and dev.to taken for a test site.
 * Links to addresses inside the server’s own network (like 169.254.169.254 or [::
1]) are reported as leftover test addresses and never asked.
 * On servers that can’t look up domain names, email links are no longer all reported
   as broken.
 * The check stops asking websites after 25 seconds, so a few slow ones can’t make
   it time out.
 * Check this page lists Fix first problems first.
 * Multisite: settings only the network’s administrator can change say to ask them,
and uninstalling removes the saved results from every site.
 * The alt text boxes fit on phone screens, and the screen mirrors properly in right-
   to-left languages.

#### 0.3.2

 * Links to pagekiwi.com say they open in a new tab.
 * Screen readers hear when Check my site finishes.

#### 0.3.1

 * Safer link checks: every request goes through WordPress’s safe request functions,
on the usual web ports only, and says it’s PageKiwi for WordPress.
 * “No description” is now “No alt text”, so it isn’t mixed up with the Description
   box in the Media Library.
 * Each picture’s Save button says which picture it saves, for screen readers. Result
headings are in order, and “Couldn’t save” is no longer shown in green.
 * The “Not secure” finding warns that switching your addresses to https before
the certificate works can lock you out, and says to ask your web person if you’re
   unsure.

#### 0.3.0

 * More checks: dead links to other websites, moved links, pictures that don’t load,
pictures over http, email domains that can’t get email, tables without headers,
embeds without a title, and different phone numbers or emails between pages.

#### 0.2.1

 * Steps match WordPress’s current wording (Save, Add Plugin) and US spelling.

#### 0.2.0

 * A “Check this page” button in the admin bar while you look at your own site (
   administrators only).
 * Each alt text box is labeled with its picture’s file name, for screen readers.

#### 0.1.0

 * First version: settings, pictures, links and headings checks; alt text from the
   list; dashboard box.
